Part #2, USCG Vietnam & American Coasts 1960s-70s:
USCG PO-1 / SMALL BOAT OPERATOR Vietnam:
This N4 Deck Jacket was for colder weather and foul weather use, it did not repel the water for very long, though it was light enough to wear under foul weather gear “Oil Skins”, or even a poncho for watch, and deck operations. They were used on both East and West Coast service issues and made their way to Vietnam as well.
USCG CPO, Khaki Shirt, RVN:
This is an unusual uniform, in that the green Army-like cloth insignia was sewn to the Khaki Shirt, rather than using the regulation metal insignia for NCOs and Officers, but it does make it more practical, this is, not a shirt either, it is a lightweight jacket, perhaps improvised in the Patroling in the Delta, may have been used on a base, but seem like he’d catch hell there by some higher officers, that didn’t like it. For all I know he could have operated with the South Vietnamese Naval Forces, I found it an interesting uniform, possibly used in flight operations (he has no wings though), or post-Vietnam War Operations, The helmet was a Naval / Marine type M1 and fit in here I think, and, likely worn with tan trousers, and black deck shoes. While I see plenty of khaki shirts and trousers, I haven’t found “any” pictures of the jacket actually in use, unfortunately, but I like it.
USCG SQ. 3, Vietnam and Alaska 1970s:
I think this is what the “Coasties” were wearing with their jeans and tennis shoes when I first was up in Alaska’s big fishing port of Dutch Harbor, They were not part of the Armed Forces then, but the Department of Transportation, and it was a completely different ball game. Far more relaxed atmosphere, but the Fisherman and the Coast Guard always got along great with each other, that was the early 1970s.
USCG. PO-1, Blue Winter Shirt:
These were not seen in Alaska, nor in Vietnam I suspect, but maybe on leave. Still, it was issued, and stowed somewhere, in a locker. The wool shirt was too warm for Vietnam. However, Stateside at a Coast Guard Base, or on a vessel in cooler weather, it would be warn with blue trousers, and black shoes.
