The prewar Reichsmarine was limited in size. One area Germany had led the world was in the construction of fast-hulled torpedo boats or Schnellboot.
This diesel-powered craft carried 4 torpedoes and varied other weaponry. By the end of the war, they were stationed on every front, including the English Channel where they inflicted a massive pre-D-Day invasion loss on allied ships training troops for the cross-channel landings!
This Coxswain wears the standard enlisted man's jumper in blue. He has been decorated with the Iron Cross 2nd Class and the Narvik Shield for participation in the battle for Norway. When on deck or out on liberty he wears the Maatrozenmutz and matching blue trousers.
